Shadow is the only one that speaks. Therefore, every line given here is what Shadow says to you over the "Mission Control" window. The titles above the lines are, of course, what level they come from. For those who haven't, can't, or don't want to play the game, I'll be including "author notes" to show how Shadow lies.
PLEASE WAIT
SHADOW: He's after you... Listen to me very carefully, if you want to survive. To move, press the arrow keys. (The arrow keys move the background. A & D are used to move left and right.)
RESET
SHADOW: That's not the right way. The beams of light will reset you. There must be another way out. (The beams of light are the goal and take you to the next level.)
SUICIDE
SHADOW: Listen to me... Use space bar to Jump. (Space bar is a player-triggered kill/suicide, used for restarting the level. J is the button to jump.)
CAGED
SHADOW: That creature is trapped there, forever. Not like you or I, we're free.
TRUST
SHADOW: Free to do as we please... Kill the creature by jumping on it. Trust me. (The creatures are invincible. Jumping on them kills you.)
GOALS
SHADOW: But maybe the cage isn't so bad. That was the exit. Stop. (You have to pass a fake light pillar to find the real one.)
BOTTOMLESS
SHADOW: Stop here. There is nowhere to go. ("Bottomless" pits actually loop -- falling down the pit in the bottom of the screen just takes you to the open space in the top of the screen.)
LEVEL ONE
SHADOW: You're not listening to me. Don't you trust me?
TIME LIMIT X
SHADOW: Hurry up! You don't have a lot of time here. The clock is ticking... ... WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? You're not even listening. (The "X" is actually replaced by a counter -- it starts at 30, counts down to 0, then counts in negatives. Never does the counter stop and you can't run out of time -- Shadow's lines appear at various seconds.)
NEEDS
SHADOW: There they are! We need those gems. Go back and get the gems! (Like the enemies, gems kill you on being touched.)
HURDLE
SHADOW: You used to trust me! ...okay. I'll stop lying. I'm sorry.
SAFETY FIRST
SHADOW: Use the button to bridge the gap.
-----> If you do: See? You can trust me...
-----> If you don't: I SAID USE THE BUTTON!!
(While he's telling the truth -- the button does put a bridge over the spike pit -- the spikes don't hurt you. Instead, they're collectable throwing tools for Entity to use. You can just as easily walk through them to the exit as bridge the gap.)
BREAKTHROUGH
SHADOW: Oh, perfect. Use the spring to jump higher. (Springs break the block they're residing on, allowing you to get under the platform.)
REFLEX
SHADOW: I wonder how that creature we saw earlier is doing. It's probably still safe in its cage.
IMPOSSIBLE
SHADOW: This is impossible. You can't cross that pit of spikes. Turn back, now. Stay where it's safe. ... (As noted before, spikes are a collectable, not a hazard. The "pit" is easily crossed by just walking through them.)
ANTONYM
SHADOW: Please just listen to me... Use the high jump boots... (The high jump boots actually cut Entity's jumping ability down to a block's height. This is useful for small areas, as you can't regulate how high Entity jumps -- he always goes to his full height.)
THE END
SHADOW: That's it. Nothing more to see. Press ESC to exit. I said that's all. You won't listen to me... I warned you. I will no longer try to save you. Good luck. (Do I even need to say how he was lying? Pressing ESC when he tells you, however, gives you an achievement.)
NOT QUITE to SYMMETRY
(Shadow is gone -- his little portrait box just appears as static during these levels.)
TRADES
SHADOW: My my, still on the run...? We should have never left the cage. The deeper you go the harder it becomes to face. (This is where reality starts to break down and Shadow now has a single, giant eye.)
RAIDS
SHADOW: Never believe anything they say... They're only trying to bring us down! Don't let them in.
MAIDS
SHADOW: But ask yourself... Do you really want this? It's only going to get harder. And it's going to cause a lot of pain. I was trying to protect you...
DEC--
SHADOW: I was doing what was best for you... us... But now, here we are. Right back where we started. What you seek is beyond the light.
--EIT
SHADOW: There is where I say goodbye. Until you need me again... (Shadow is back to his eyeless form. He spends the rest of the level laughing at you.)
DECEPTION
SHADOW: There must be another way out.
(The most interesting thing here is that this is clearly the first room of the game. Not only is this the last line Shadow tells you in the level RESET, you can even hear the warping noise just before you find the beam of light. If you go through the beam anyway, you get the bad ending. Waiting will make the beam go away, which leads to the second area of this level.)
SHADOW: You see...? You should trust me more. I only want what's best for us.
(At this point, the same black flame that surrounds the enemies appears on Entity. Progressing leads you to a room almost completely symmetrical/mirrored -- on standing on one platform, a figure looking exactly like you except black leaps out to land on the opposite platform. This is Shadow's physical state.)
SHADOW: Stop, you're only going to kill us both. I'm a part of you. You can't kill me without killing yourself. It's like looking in a mirror... heh.
(Shadow's single large eye reopens.)
SHADOW: Brilliant, isn't it? Hah hah hah! You don't have to do it, you know. (Eye Closed) We could stay here, forever. Safe in this cage. Bahahahahahhaha ha!! It's wonderful, isn't it?! Let's just stay here. Forever. Just us... We don't have to let anyone else in. We don't need them. (Eye Open) Hahahaha ah haha haha!! This is wonderful. (Eye Closed) La la la la la la la la la la la la la... La la la la la la la la la la la la laaa... Do you remember when you created me? I've done so much for you since then... you should be thankful. But this is thanks enough. (Eye Open) Safety... for all eternity! (Eye Closed) Why don't you just relax? Take a break... We have plenty of time. Sadly there's no way out of this one. This is the end, my friend.
(Shockingly, Shadow is completely telling the truth here. You and he are in perfect sync and the only way to die is the pit between you. However, there is one thing you have that he doesn't -- the ability to hang. Leap over the pit, throw a spike, then steer yourself to safety. Shadow plunges into the pit and dies (his portrait going to static again), causing reality to break. The screen begins to crack like broken glass and the level name scrambles itself into nonsensical gibberish key-smashing. The very last "scramble," however, are the words "POETIC END.")
???
(Shadow is dead and the entire HUD, level name and all, is gone. Surprisingly, the black glow that Entity carried the entire game is also gone. There are no enemies, no obstacles, just a single beam of light. Leaping into it gives you the good ending and the game is over.)
